The number of campers is surging and so is the demand for transporters of campers or RV’s ((Recreational Vehicles). Transporting RV’s may be a daunting task, but with right safeguards, it may not be so.

First task is to decide whether the RV must be towed or driven to the new destination. A motorized RV in good working condition can be driven to its destination point. A licensed transporter is the best bet as he has the experience, right credentials and insurance to transport your RV.

Driving your RV to its new home can help save a lot of cash, but it is not a workable option when your RV is not in driving condition or is a trailer, in which cases it has to be towed.

Whatever be the choice of transport, you can ensure proper transport of your RV by making the following preparations for your RV transport:

Inside The RV:

  • Secure latches on all cabinets, windows and doors. Tape them shut if they can be latched.
  • Remove and store away any personal items hanging on the walls.
  • Switch off all electronics and appliances and disconnect gas lines and power supply.
  • Remove any loose items and store cargo in appropriate compartments.
  • Ensure that there are no loose items in the RV.

Outside The RV

  • Check parking, breaks, indicator lights, and turn signal if they are functional.
  • Lock slide-outs in case they are present in your RV.
  • Latch and secure all pop-ups, chains and cargo doors.

Mechanical:

  • Check fluid levels (transmission fluids, engine oil, fluid for power steering, coolant) and any leaks
  • Secure hitch and tow bar and make sure they are latched and installed.
  • Examine battery and ensure amp/ voltage gauge exhibits that it is inside the correct range.

Safety

  • Check tire pressure and also any excessive tread ware or cracks.
  • Ensure that parking and service brakes function properly. and if RV has air breaks, the air pressure must be OK.

Other Tips:

  • Depending on weather, fill tanks with anti-freeze.
  • Provide transporters with full set of keys.
  • Give proper instructions to RV movers about emergency procedures.
